Sands' annual ‘Say Their Name Day’ is a day of recognition, remembrance and connection intended to help reduce the stigma of pregnancy and infant loss by supporting the idea that every baby matters and deserves to be celebrated.

Held for the first time in 2019, the concept was widely embraced by parents across Australia, who took the opportunity to share their baby's name with the Sands community on social media.

For our CEO, Jackie Mead, 'Say Their Name Day' responds to the frequent wish expressed by bereaved parents to be able to say their baby's name and to hear it from others.

"Contrary to what people may think, talking to/with bereaved families about their baby does not compound their grief – it is often a welcome opportunity to express their love,” Jackie says.

Melbourne couple Amy and Shaun Hidge say the act of saying their baby’s name, or hearing it from others, is empowering.

“It brings joy and warms my heart every time a friend or family member mentions Stella’s name because it reminds me that she played a very special part in all of our lives,” Amy says.

“A good friend recently presented me with a special gift with Stella’s name on it and I was completely overwhelmed with love and happiness to know that our Stella touched so many.”

In 2020 Sands is using the momentum of 'Say Their Name Day' to help develop programs and services that will provide more comfort and even better care to families after miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn death.

"We're asking people to host a special 'Say Their Name' fundraising event in honour of a baby they know and love," Jackie explains.

"This is an opportunity to remember their baby and connect with others, whilst helping to ensure support will be available to any bereaved parent who needs it in the future."
