October 15th is International Pregnancy & Infant Loss Day, where bereaved parents from Australia and around the world pause to remember their babies who’ve died.

This annual day of remembrance is a significant one on Sands’ calendar, honouring the approximately 106,000 thousand babies who lose their lives to miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn death each year.

In 2020 a number of events and activities are planned to mark the occasion. We warmly invite you to participate.

Walks to Remember

Sands' Walks to Remember are special annual events around Australia that bring bereaved parents together with their families and friends to commemorate their babies who’ve died, to share their experiences openly and to support each other.

In 2020 some of our Walks to Remember may look a little different due to local restrictions related to COVID-19. Our aim, however, is to ensure every bereaved family has an opportunity to participate.

That's why, in addition to our traditional face-to-face events we'll also be offering some virtual Walks to Remember in those locations where public gatherings can't take place at the moment. This year we can also support you to put together your own private memorial walk shared with family and friends.

To find details of how you can participate in any of our Walk to Remember locations, visit our events page.

Lullabies and Loss

Sands – in partnership with five other organisations – is inviting Australian bereaved families and their loved ones to add their baby’s name to a virtual memorial quilt, which will help illustrate to the wider community, the size of the issue and the impact that pregnancy and infant loss has on the lives of those left behind.

We’re calling this project ‘Lullabies and Loss’ and we invite you to submit a message of remembrance, love or hope to your baby, which we’ll represent on a digital square on the online quilt, to be launched on International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

To create your personal memorial tile for the quilt, please visit the Lullabies and Loss website. Submissions will be accepted during the month of September– www.lullabiesandloss.org.au

Victorian Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Service

This year, this beautiful and moving annual service, supported by the Victorian Government, is going virtual. The event will be accessible to anyone around Australia who would like to attend. To register for this event to be held on the 15 October at 7pm (AEDT) visit Victorian Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Service.

Light up the night

Each year, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Australia organise a long list of landmarks to be lit up purple to help raise awareness of the devastating impact of miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn death. Check out the comprehensive list of locations here.
