Sands in Victoria is a community of parents, family members, friends, volunteers, staff, health professionals and financial supporters providing peer-support services for bereaved parents.
Established in 1983, Sands has been supporting Victorian parents for over 30 years, and has also been educating health workers and medical professionals in the care of bereaved parents.
Our services are delivered using a “peer-support” model by trained volunteers, known within the Sands community as “Parent Supporters”. Parent supporters are parents who have themselves have experienced the death of a baby and can genuinely empathise with the parents, families and friends accessing our services. Their training enables them of combine their empathy with real skills in offering helpful care through the support line and the support groups.
Miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn death is a serious issue in Victoria, with approximately 2.7 stillbirths and newborn deaths occurring daily. Sands is often the first step bereaved parents can take in a journey of active healthy grieving.
