Early in 2019 grandparents from the Sands community participated in research by The University of Adelaide into grandparents' experiences of grief after stillbirth. The project's researchers have published their initial findings.

Researchers Jane Lockton, Clemence Due and Melissa Oxlad from the School of Psychology conducted the first study in the world to specifically look at grandmothers’ experience of stillbirth and the support they need.

The study found that grandmothers' grief was rarely acknowledged and that there are few supports tailored to them.

The study also identified better ways to support grandmothers, including greater acknowledgement of their grief, including them in education around stillbirth, and linking them in to peer support services.
